Creating the perfect top-knot bun...

Dear Margaret,

         I love when you post about NYC eateries so I can have a list when I come to town next:) So, last weekend at a wedding, Meredith Sanger pulled out of her clutch this donut looking thing (hers was dark brown) to change her hair from down to the perfect bun! I went to Sally beauty supply the next day and bought a blond one.. they are like $3. Some people make them out of a tube sock but it seemed too complicated:) Also, there are apparently many ways to use this bun maker but I have only mastered the ballerina top-knot look.. here is what you need to do it the "top-knot" way and how to do it :

Supplies:

"donut" from Sally Beauty Supply in your hair color.. or homemade tube sock "donut", rubber band in your hair color, hairspray (I prefer L'oreal Elnett Satin because it isn't sticky), bobby pins in your hair color (optional.. if you have loose ends), and a brush (optional but I love my Mason Pearson brush bc it makes a good smooth pony).

Steps:

Step 1: Put hair in high pony tail with a rubber band and spray with hairspray so it's not slippery.

Step 2: Put pony through the donut and slide donut to where you have about an inch of hair sticking out of it.

Step 3: Tuck the ends of your hair into the bottom of the donut hole and start rolling it down (while tucking ends at the same time) until it gets to the base where your rubber band is. 

Step 4: Spray with hairspray and use bobby pins to pull up any loose ends or secure the bun.

There you have yourself a perfect top-knot bun:)
