4-1-1 Hamptons

Dear Kara,

Those videos sound awesome. I am always impressed by you, you don't let excuses stop you from working out. I most of the time just am not in the mood, after a long day of work or I just can't wake up early.

I thought you might enjoy hearing about some of my favorite spots in the Hamptons. The Hamptons is actually an area on the South Fork of Long Island, New York comprised of lots of tiny towns and villages. (Westhampton, Quogue, Hampton Bays, Shinnecock Hills, Southampton, Water Mill, Bridgehampon, Sagaponack, Sag Harbor, Wainscott, East Hampton, Amagansett, & Montauk) From the city most people either drive out there, take the train or ride the Jitney/Luxury Liner (bus). You can also sea plane, helicopter or private plane your way out for the truly fabulous. Michael has once even taken a NYC taxi! It tends to be at least a 2 1/2hr trip. The traffic is getting lots worse so when out there it is a big pain to get from village to village.

The Hamptons is all about the preppy Ralph Lauren style, seersucker, gingham, polka dots, and bright chinos. The days are about the beach/pool, riding bikes or taking a jog. There is also a soul cycle, core fusion, and physique that stays booked up. Any of which you are sure to have a star sighting. If you hit a rainy day, one of my favorites is to do a wine tasting at the Wolffer Estate. Great rose.

The lunch must have is a lobster roll. For the first couple years I made sure to try eveyone's lobster roll and I honestly think Cyril's is my favorite. Cyril's is a legendary place where Cyril sits at the first booth drinking, smoking, wearing a sarong, button down, and an Hermes or Chanel scarf around his neck. (quite a site) Cyril's is also known for their signature frozen drink, the BBC. The BBC is a delish blend fresh Banana, Baileys, colada, run and a floater for good measure. I have never been able to finish more than 2. Cyril's picks up as the beach starts to empty and becomes quite the scene.

At night people eat out, there are tons of restaurants, or the ever popular BBQ at home or Clam Bake on the beach. There are lots of farmers markets so everything is super fresh. My two favorite restaurants are Sen for sushi or the American Hotel for a traditional American dinner.

Perfect Weekend!

Brooke Burke's Secret for a Bangin' Body; See Instant Results :

Dear Margaret,

That cover-up is so cute! I'll definitely have to order one before the summer is over... I love the Missoni-esque looking one:)

I wanted to share with you my absolute favorite workout videos that I have been alternating this summer. I've always admired Brooke Burke's amazing body, so did a little research to find out exactly what she does (this is what she said in Fitness Magazine):

"I try to get to a Pilates Plus class, which is an intense, fast-paced workout that's done on a special reformer machine, at least three times a week. I also go to the gym a couple of times. I do 15 minutes on the treadmill, walking at a 3.5-mile-per-hour speed and a 15-grade incline, and then I do the 45-minute head-to-toe workout I designed with trainer Gregory Joujon-Roche for one of my new DVDs. I don't think you need more than an hour to do cardio and full-body toning. I don't have three hours a day to devote to my body, but I do have an hour five days a week."

So, of course I ordered her two circuit training DVD's to alternate with my Pilates videos, Barre, and cardio.. and OMG do they work! I noticed results after the first time and feel like they make my body the tightest/most sore of them all. I travel with them too b/c all you need is 2 pounds weights (which are easy to find anywhere, or you can sub with water bottles/cans, etc.) and it's only 45 minutes of intense circuit training. If you want instant results, then these are your videos:

Must Have Swim Cover Up

Dear Kara,

The cherry crumble looks delish and so easy. I have been buying cherries a lot lately for a dessert but this takes it to another level.

Now that I am back at VS from time time I can't help but share some of the awesome product. Since I get to see it first hand and try it on;  I have a mega inside scoop.

My favorite cover up just went on sale to $39.50, it's a total steal. Whats so great about this cover up is unlike clothes where you put over your head or step into, this one you wrap around you. That way your swimsuit doesn't move around from the putting on or taking off process, causing the unwanted peak-a-boo at the beach. In addition this cover up is super comfy and light. Did I mention that it is Sexy with a capital S without being the other Ssss (skanky/slutty/skin tight).

I am still debating whether or not to buy mine in berry burst or paradise blue for the honeymoon! :)

XOXOXOXOXOXO
Margaret

Best Healthy Alternative Summer Cherry Crumble Recipe:

Dear Margaret,

I'm with you.. I love the way eating "vegan" makes me feel and how it gives my digestive system a break, but I just don't think I could give up my meats, cheeses, and butter:) I have some favorite vegan products I'll share with you later when I get back from my vacation (have to see the brands when I get home:)

As you know, I'm in the Traverse City, Michigan area right now which is named the "Cherry Capital of the World".. and they aren't kidding. There are fresh fruit stands on the side of every country road and home made cherry pies on every corner.. it's amazing. I wanted to try out a healthier alternative (to all the processed stuff) with my newly purchased farm fresh cherries and here is what I found (This way, you can enjoy all the flavor from a cherry crumble pie without the gigantic sugar crash):

Ingredients:

  • 6 cups halved pitted cherries
  • 1/2 cup raw sugar
  • 1 1/4 cups old fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup flour of choice (I like oat flour)
  • 1/4 cups sliced almonds
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 8 tablespoons (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, diced, plus more for greasing baking dish

  • Procedure:
  • Adjust oven rack to middle position and preheat oven to 350°F. Butter a 9-inch baking dish. In a medium bowl, toss together cherries and sugar until well combined. Pour into prepared baking dish.
  • In a large bowl, combine oats, flour, almonds, and salt. Use your fingers to rub butter into the mixture until it has the texture of wet sand. Spread oat mixture over top of cherries. Bake until golden, about 60 minutes. Let cool slightly and serve warm. Add a garnish of Greek yogurt, if desired.
  • (serves 8)
  • Enjoy!

Going Vegan....

Dear Kara,

Love the braid secret! Braids looks so fresh and are a great summer go to.

Recently one of my NYC friends has gone Vegan and tonight I went out to dinner with her to a Vegan restaurant, V Note. To start we had pumpkin and squash gnocchi, followed by mushroom risotto and garlic spinach. Everything was honestly delish and by the end I was pleasantly full and not the least bit close to the uncomfortable full. We also drank a great organic pinot. It was really nice to have a meal at a restaurant and know that nothing was cooked with butter.

For a refresher (because I had to ask) vegan is nothing coming from an animal, so no dairy, meat, cheese, etc...

It has now been several weeks since my friend made the switch to vegan and I made her go over the changes she has noticed. She said that although she has worked out less she has still maintained her weight. She has noticed more energy than before.

While I know I can't give up my cheese, fish, or steak it was great to try something new.

Best Celeb Trick to Create a "Fuller Summer Braid":

Dear Margaret,

I love your Charcuterie plate "how-to".. I've always wanted to put one together but didn't know where to start.. such a great guide, thanks!

My favorite hairstyle in the summer is messy, braided hair...since I've been in California and Lake Michigan for some time now, it seems to be the easiest "quick fix" to create a manageable, beachy look.  I've always wondered though how these celebs with normal/thin hair are able to rock such thick looking braids.. well, I found the trick from "thebeautydepartment.com"!:

*All you need to do to create a fuller, more textured braid is:

-spray hair with hair spray and/or beach spray to make it more piecy/less slippery (I also use dry shampoo since my hair is very fine).
-separate hair into the three pieces to create your braid.
-before braiding, braid the center piece into its own braid.. then braid all three stands together.
.. this creates the illusion of a much thicker braid! I pull out strands around my face and loosen the braid for a messier look. I also use bobby pins where needed and of course spray again with hair spray. And that's it!

*check out more braid tricks here!

The "How To" on the Charcuterie Plate

Dear Kara,

Your easy breakfast sounds yummy and so easy.

I know we both love to entertain and learn tips, recipes, and ideas on entertaining. I love having charcuterie plates when out to dinner but had no clue how to put one together myself. So I did some research..... Of course like the cheese plate there aren't any rules, you can focus on one region, one type of cured meat or a variety. I figured I would first get the grasp on the overall options....

Charcuterie is a French word for prepared meat products. Chair meaning flesh and cuit meaning cooked; charcuterie was originially a way of preserving meat before the time of refrigeration. But now we think of it as a way of bringing out delish flavors in the meat.

Typically you want to average 2 ounces of meat per person when it is for an appetizer, bread or crackers, a light cheese, spreads , pickled garnishes and some fruit. You ideally want to meat from a butcher or deli but if you don't have one the regular grocery store should have a decent selection.

Now the breakdown....

1. The Meats (3 different categories)
  • Dry-cured: Prosciutto di parma or di San Daniele, Speck, Spicy Coppa, Bresaola, Mocetta, or Jamon Serrano.
  • Dry-cured sausage: Soppressata, Chorizo navarre, or any Salami.
  • Pate, Terrine or Rillettes.

2. Bread or Crackers: I typically find the baguette or the flatbread cracker to be the best options because it tastes good with all the different meats.

3. Cheese: You want to keep these mild such as the suggestions below. Stronger cheeses such as gouda, blue, or cheddar tend to overpower the meat.
  • Hard: Parmesan, Pecorino or Manchego
  • Soft: Ricotta, Goat or Burrata Mozzarella
    4. Garnishes:
    • Pickled/Marinated: Cornichons and Cured Olives
    • Spreads: Whole grain mustard and fig or apricot jam
    • Fruits: Fresh figs, dates or dried apricots.
Left to right: Cornichons, Salami, Prosciutto di Parma, Manchego (my favorite cheese!), Figs, Pate & toasted baguette
Spicy Coppa with Mustard and a Conrichons on a baguette slice

    No Bake Refrigerated "Overnight Oats":

    Dear Margaret,

So random you met Sam Edelman.. and even more so that we have those exact same sandals at c.jane right now:) Super cute.

I wanted to share with you this amazing and effortless recipe I found on Pinterest recently.. it's great for a grab-and-go breakfast in the morning or even a snack later in the day. Also, there are many variations.. like "apples and cinnamon", "raspberry vanilla", "banana cocoa","blueberry coconut", etc. etc.. the options are endless once you have the base (yogurt, oats, milk).. I made the "banana and peanut butter" one and it really tastes like dessert, but healthy. Here's what you need:

    • 1/4 cup uncooked old fashioned rolled oats
    • 1/3 cup milk (I use almond milk unsweetened)
    • 1/4 cup low-fat plain or vanilla Greek yogurt
    • 1-1/2 teaspoons dried chia seeds
    • 1 tablespoon peanut butter
    • 1 teaspoon honey, optional (or substitute any preferred sweetener)
    • 1/4 cup diced ripe banana, or enough to fill jar (approx. half of a small banana)
    • little mason jar (I just used an old jar of fancy nuts)

In a half pint (1 cup) jar, add oats, milk, yogurt, chia seeds, peanut butter and honey. Put lid on jar and shake until well combined. Remove lid, add bananas and stir until mixed throughout. Return lid to jar and refrigerate overnight or up to 2 days. Eat chilled. So good, hope you enjoy!

Meeting Sam Edelman....& my new obsession

    Dear Kara,

Love the new vintage finds from K. Crow's nest!

On Saturday we went to Sam Edelman in East Hampton because I desperately needed a neutral sandal. I have noticed everything everywhere is thongs sandals. I thought that style was going to hurt between my toes but was pleasantly surprised that there was no break in necessary. I ended up falling in love with their #1 seller the Gigi in cork (something I had never seen). Vanessa Hudgens is a big fan too. The sandal comes in about 27 different options and is under $100.

Not only did I score great new sandals, Mr. Sam Edelman was there as well with his wife. Michael and him got to talking about their matching watches and the next thing I know we are talking to Sam! Michael is exchanging contacts...etc. It was quite the highlight of my weekend.

Now I am a big Sam Edelman fan.

    XOXOXOXOXO

    Must Have Suncare....

    Dear Kara,

Since it is summertime I have been trying out all sorts of sunscreen products. Skin cancer scares the bajeezes out of me so I am very anal about protection. I learned that if your sunscreen is more than 1 year old toss it, it has lost its protection and most likely built up bacteria. (gross) I also learned from the doctor that you are supposed to reapply protection every 2 hours. I had been reapplying more like every 3-4 hours.

I have tried out almost everything under the sun and here are my favorites.... (so far)

    Face....
If you want the creme de la creme nothing beats Lancaster Sunscreen. If I could, I would use only their line for all my sun care. Their products feel nothing like a sunscreen, more like your favorite cream, and works amazingly. I have used their anti-aging sunscreen ($80+) and their regular ($40ish) both awesome. When I see the bottle (since its orange) I think of it as the Hermes of sun care.

    Body....
Right now I have really been loving Kiehl's Vital Sun Protection lotion Spf 30 ($19.50) The lotion goes on easily, has a light consistency, does a great job and doesn't have any scent. (which I love)

    The Quick Options....
I am not a big fan on relying on a spray to do all the protection because I have read enough material that claims it isn't effective but it is just so easy that I like having it on hand. Neutrogena makes one that is even for wet skin which is really nice because after you get wet you can use this just to boost up the protection.

Another great quickie for protection is Dr. Dennis Gross' powerful sun protection wipes, they are super easy and so compact that you can keep them everywhere.

    Hair....
This is particularly important if you have colored hair because you don't want the sun to undo all you just paid $$$$ for. Fredrik Fakkai makes a great summer hair invisible summer protection conditioner. ($22)

Best Balanced Post-Workout High Protein Green Smoothie:

    Dear Margaret,

I wish I had a Victoria's Secret  body.. I'll definitely have to try this Soul Cycle:) Speaking of working out, I made the best "post workout" protein shake the other day that kept me satisfied for hours.. plus it's completely balanced with: healthy fats (necessary for absorption of nutrients), clean lean protein (necessary for muscle recovery after workouts), fruit (banana-potassium good for working out), a green vegetable (kale or spinach-so good for you all around), and calcium+vitamin D (milk or almond milk- essential nutrients). Plus, as an added bonus, it tastes amazing and you can't taste the "green". Here's the recipe.. you have to try it!

-1 1/2 Tablespoons Rice Vanilla Protein Powder (I use NutriBiotic brand)
-2 teaspoons or more of organic peanut or almond butter
    -1/2 medium banana
-1+ cup almond milk or regular milk of choice (I use Blue Diamond Almond Breeze Unsweetened Original)
    -1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
-handful or more of kale or spinach
..throw all ingredients in a blender with some ice and add more milk as needed.. and that's it! So delicious and nutritious:)

    Victoria's Secret Models Workout Secret....

    Dear Kara,

Miley Cyrus has been looking amazing! Last night the Victoria's Secret models were spotted at spin class at Soul Cycle in NYC. The VS models aren't the only celebs that are addicted to spin, Kelly Ripa has been obsessed for quite sometime, quoting to sometimes go 7 days a week. Hilary Duff and Alicia Keys both say that was the key to getting their body back post baby. Also the the Bush twins and Chelsea Clinton are fans.. all three have even been seen in class at the same time.

So whats the appeal? It is the most bang for your buck out of all the cardio options. You can burn 500-700 calories in 45-60 minute session!! I have tried Soul Cycle (which has multiple NYC, Hamptons & LA options), Flywheel (NYC only) Crunch and Equinox Gym. All are great for different reasons. Chances are no matter where you live there is a spin studio. You have to go about 5 times to get used to the bikes and workout. After that you'll be hooked!

    XOXOXOXOOX

How To Get Miley Cyrus' New Hot Pilates Bod- At Home+On-the-Go:

    Dear Margaret,

That steak looks bomb digs:).. def looks like something Ryan would like too! Thanks:)

So, I don't know if you have noticed, but Miley Cyrus has been looking very toned lately! I was on the elliptical at the gym, simultaneioulsy watching E! which reported that she has been privately training with Pilates instructor Mari Windsor.. and then they recommended her DVD: Mari Winsor's Lower Body Pilates DVD. So, being the fitness video addict that I am, I immediately ordered it:) I highly enjoyed it..especially bc there are three 2o min segments (so you can break it up throughout the day), and there is no equipment needed (so its great to bring with me when I travel). Before seeing this report on Miley about her amazing transformation, I had ordered Empower Portable Pilates Studio on OpenSky because it's supposed to have the same effects as a Pilates Reformer (which is so expensive to take those classes). I really like that one too because of the added resistance and the equipment included.. and am excited to be able to mix up the two DVD's while at home, when I'm too lazy to go to the gym, or when I'm traveling. Here are some pics of Miley's hot bod (my Pilates inspiration) and the DVD's that will help attain that:) Also, under the pictures I quoted a short segment about her particular workouts, if you want a little preview. Hope you enjoy.. would be good for you since space in NYC is so hard to come by!

    xo,

    Kara

    Empower Portable Pilates Studio

    Mine at home:)

"Mari Winsor, the star’s very own Pilates instructor, recently gave us the 4-1-1 on the exercises Miley does to keep her figure in shape. The moves, which are featured on Winsor’s Lower Body Pilates DVD available on GaiamTV, consists of exercising the waist, the glutes, the buttocks, and the inner and outer thighs to ensure a maximum full-impact workout. According to trainer, Miley practices these moves six times a week at her studio in Los Angeles.
How does Miley get those amazing abs? In Pilates, every exercise that you do is focused on your abs, or as we call it in Pilates, your powerhouse. There are specific exercises where you might feel a little more of a burn in that area but you are constantly using your abs to maintain control of your body’s movement. The one-hundred the double leg stretch and the criss-cross are all crucial to sculpt your abs.
    The 100:
Lie flat on your back and bring your knees into your chest making sure that the lower back is pressing into the floor. Palms facing down lift your head and shoulders up off the mat. Take your arms straight down by your side, palms facing down. Straighten your legs to a 45-degree angle rotating your legs open from the hip squeezing your legs and heels together. If you have a bad back, bend your knees a little. Breathe in through your nose for a count of five then out through your nose for a count of five until you reach 100. As you’re breathing, pump your arms up and down 100 times keeping them next to your body and parallel to the floor.
    Double Leg Stretch:
Lying flat on your back on the mat bring both knees in to your chest. You should be hugging your knees by holding on to your ankles with both hands. Lift your head and shoulders off the mat keeping your shoulders down. Your head should be relatively close to your knees. Imagine yourself being tucked in to a magicians box. Be as tiny as you can be. Stretch your legs out to a 45 degree angle from the body, legs together and slightly rotated from the hip so you can squeeze your heels together, as you extend your arms fully straight by your head. Keep you upper torso stable, tummy pulled in shoulders down and lower back on the mat. As you move both arms and legs in the opposite direction, inhale. Exhale as you use your tummy to draw the legs and arms with control back to the original position in the magicians box. Repeat this ten times. Each time you extend your arms and legs away from your center, give yourself a challenge and try to reach and extra inch longer to create more length in the body and more work in the core.
    Criss Cross:
Lie flat on your back. Your hands go behind your head with one hand on top of the other, elbows open, shoulders down. Lift your head and shoulders up off the mat as your right knee comes into your chest and your left leg is extended out at a 45-degree angle. Twist in your waist taking your left elbow towards your right knee. Remember to twist from the waist rather than just moving your elbow towards the knee. As you twist to one side hold the position for three counts then switch to the other side for three counts. Do 10 reps.
The workout in my new Lower Body Pilates DVD encompasses what I refer to as the “rear view”. Often times when we look at ourselves in the mirror, we look at ourselves from the front, from the side, but very rarely do we look at what is behind us. This is a view that is most commonly seen by everyone else, so my thought was to make a workout encompassing everything my clients have ever requested from the waist down: The waist, the hips, the gluts, the buttocks the inner and the outer thighs. If this workout is done without stopping, it could be deemed as a total body workout and cardio as well. If weight loss is your main goal, don’t forget to go on a diet plan along with the workout. In addition to dropping a few pounds, you will definitely lose inches and notice the toning in your muscles."

    Best Summer Steak Recipe

    Dear Kara,

We spent the weekend in Amagansett and it was great; we were at the beach everyday. On Saturday night Michael and I threw a dinner party for 8 people. We tried a new steak recipe, Pacific Rim Flank Steak and it was amazing! The recipe is super easy, you really can't mess it up. We meant to cook the steaks to medium rare and it ended up being more like medium well and they were still awesome. This recipe would work for skirt or hanger steak as well but flank is leaner than those so it is a better choice nutrition wise.

Here's the recipe (We doubled it because we were cooking for 8)

    -1 Cup prepared teriyaki marinade
-1/2 Cup chopped onion (we used white but any will do)
    -1/3 Cup of honey
-1/3 Cup of fresh orange juice (we ended up using not fresh squeezed and it was still yummy)
    -1 Tbsp. dark sesame oil
    -1 Tbsp. soy sauce
-1 large clove garlic, crushed and peeled
    -Salt and Pepper
    -1 2-lb beef flank steak
    -Rosemary Sprigs

    Steps:
    1. In a medium shallow dish combine teriyaki marinade, chopped onion, honey, orange juice, sesame oil, soy sauce, garlic and pepper to taste, blend together. Reserve 3/4 cup of marinade for basting. Put both in the fridge to further blend for three hours.

    2. With a sharp knife lightly score both sides of the flank steak in criss-cross pattern. Salt and Pepper both sides of the steak. Place steak in marinade dish, turning to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and marinate in refrigerator for an hour.

    3. 45 minutes prior to cooking, remove steak in marinade from the refrigerator and let sit in marinade uncovered so that it reaches room temperature.

    4. Remove steak from marinade and discard marinade. Place steaks on the grill over medium heat. Grill uncovered for 15 minutes for medium rare to medium (check to be sure), basting occasionally with reserved marinade and turning over once.

    5. Place remaining marinade in a small saucepan and bring to a boil. Carve the steak diagonally across the grain into thin slices. Place steak on serving dish and spoon hot marinade over the beef. Garnish the steak with rosemary sprigs.

    YUMMMMMMM.......

    Ingredients (excluding the steak)

    The marinade congealing

The steaks cut and salt and peppered
Steaks in the marinade, let sit in the fridge covered for an hour
    The finished product, DELISH!
