Complete Meal Replacement "Survival Kit".. for when you don't have time to stop:

Dear Margaret,

I've always wondered about that Trader Joe's dip.. good to know that its delicious and low calorie! I'll def stock up on that when I get home! So, these last few days at L.A. Market have been non stop.. and all the showrooms ever have to offer us is sugar and soda... so to avoid malnutrition and a gigantic sugar crash, I bring my own "whole food, complete nutrition" meals/snacks with me for when we don't have time to go to a sit down lunch. (Of course I don't bring the whole protein powder or PB2 powdered peanut butter containers.. I put them into zip locks with a plastic measuring spoon for easy transport). Here is what I bring in my bag for emergencies (not including raw cashews and my paleo packs, which are a given staple: http://2noblecrows.blogspot.com/2012/05/best-healthy-high-energy-snack-for-on.html):

1.) ProBar "Superfood Slam" Complete Meal Replacement Bars- I eat these when I can't stop for lunch and want to make sure I'm still getting greens, fruits, and vitamins instead of just junk/fillers/sugar. They contain ingredients like organic wheatgrass, flaxseed, and barley grass, yet still taste delicious. "Superfood Slam is a nutritional powerhouse. Our organic acai berries, pure raspberries, dark chocolate and live greens are blended together with PROBAR's 15 signature whole food ingredients for a bar that is good for you and tastes SUPER."  I always carry one of these in my purse for when I need a quick lunch.. and I usually add an iced soy latte for the extra protein and a good wash down:) Available at Whole Foods, Amazon.com, local health food stores, etc.

2.) BlenderBottles- These are awesome for travel/on-the-go bc you can add your protein powder packets (or any mix you desire) and after shaking it, the metal ball effectively breaks everything up so you don't need a blender. Everybody who drinks protein powder needs one! When I need a quick, uplifting snack at market, travel, or after a workout, I take my blender bottle and add some protein powder, PB2, and almond milk or water (note- I prefer unsweetened almond milk for the creamier texture but sometimes bottled water is all you can get)... and shake away!  Available at Amazon.com and Bed Bath & Beyond.

3.) Nutibiotic Rice Protein Powder in Chocolate- I pack a Ziploc full of this protein powder with me for a late morning or mid day energy booster.. mainly bc it's all natural with no fillers, doesn't taste fake,  and it is low calorie for the amount of protein delivered.  I also put a plastic tablespoon in the Ziploc for accurate measuring. One tablespoon is 60 calories and 12 grams of protein, so I usually do 3 tablespoons plus one of PB2 in the blender bottle for an adequate, sustainable  snack full of protein. The vanilla is great too! I get mine a Sprouts Farmers Market but also available at Whole Foods or Amazon.com. I also like Hemp and Whey protein powders!

4.) PB2 Powdered Peanut Butter- This stuff is great for when you want the flavor of peanut butter but not the added fat and calories. Don't get me wrong, I love all nut butters and the natural heathy fats they provide... but sometimes your smoothies/shake are already so caloric that the added fat is unnecessary. In comes PB2- It delivers relatively the same taste for a fraction of the calories... Plus it's way easier to travel with than messy peanut butter. One tablespoon is 22 calories and 2.5 grams of protein... compared to peanut butter which is 105 calories for one tablespoon. Sometimes it's just worth the sacrifice:) And its all natural.. the peanuts and just pressed to remove the natural oils.  I only like it mixed with a shake though.. not great on its own. Available at many grocery stores but I order mine from Amazon.com.

xoxo,
Kara
